Germany into semi-finals and send France home (FIFA WC 2014)

The West-European Derby looked to be the match of the quarter-finals. The last two meetings went Germany's way. This match was yet to be decided. What the people expected were plenty goals but all they got was a 1-0 victory for the Germans.

This is Germany's 12th quarter-final victory and the 4th time in a row they have managed to make it into the semi-finals.

The 4th of July also marked the first time West Germany picked up the prestigious World Cup. It was also a chance for Klose to become the World Cup leading goal scorer.

Hummels couldn't even travel to the ground for training for Germany's previous match. Today he was well enough, started the match and scored the opening goal for the Germans.

The last 10 minutes produced great chances for both teams. The likes of Benzema, Giroud and Pogba just couldn't equalise or win the match for France. In the dying seconds of the match Benzema could have forced the match into extra time to keep France hopes alive.

It was a good start for France. Their first chance being in 7 minutes, with a shot from Benzema.

Pogba fouled Kroos, who took the free-kick and Hummels did the rest as he headed the ball past Lloris.

Klose went down in the penalty box but the Argentinian referee waved away Klose's appeals. There was definitely contact in the box but Klose had failed to control the ball.

The best chance for France came from Valbuena with a left footed shot. Neuer slapped his chance out like a tennis shot but had pushed it towards Benzema who then missed the target.

After half-time, France were looking to overturn the 1-0 deficit while Germany wanted to maintain or increase their goals.

In the second half it looked like France had a goal in them. They created many chances, even forcing Schweinsteiger to fall back into a defensive position.

While the French looked to be dominating, the German dominance appeared to dissipating.

It remained 1-0 to Germany while French hearts were broken. Greizmann couldn't contain his emotions as he cried after the final whistle. He played very well during the tournament but he couldn't do it alone.

Germany are the first team to book their place in the semi-finals of the World Cup. In the semi-finals Germany will either face Brazil or Colombia who play later on tonight.
